1) Look at the short powerpoint introducting America’s Least Wanted2) https://www.invasivespeciesinfo.gov/go to this link and click Species Profile to choose an invasive species.3) Check out the discussion board and post your choice. Duplicates are not ok, so if we cannot have 25 presentations on the Subterranean Formosan Termite! First Come First Served topics posted on the discussion board. So if you post last, you need to read through everyone else’s topic choices first.(please tell what you choose when you decide to work.Because I need post the topic to the discussion board so someone else will not same as I did.)I choose the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle.https://www.invasivespeciesinfo.gov/profile/coconut-rhinoceros-beetleIF the topic is ok to you, just tell me. If you want to change it, please tell me before you do. I want to make sure I did the difference work with my classmates.4) Projects are due posted on the Discussion board by the end of the course. Use the template provided Below:Slide 1: TitleSlide 2: IntroductionSlide 3: Where the organism comes from and where it’s invadingSlide 4: What kind of problems is it causing, including estimates of monetary costSlide 5: What is being done (or should/could be done in your opinion) about itSlide 6: Extra infoSlide 7: MLA or APA cited references. The file is the introduction from the professor and the other one is the example of the project.

AMERICA’S LEAST WANTED

The Local Health Threat
The Commercial Threat
The Biodiversity Threat
Whenever a new species is
brought, it is called “introduced.”
• Example: the
Pineapple introduced
to Hawai’i from
Central America
When an introduced species
becomes a problem:
• The Federal Law defines
an “INVASIVE” species
as one that:
• 1) Causes Health
Problems
• 2) Causes Property
Damage
• 3) Causes Biodiversity
Loss

Burmese Python

Introduction
● The Burmese Python is one of the 5 largest
snakes in the world
● These pythons prey on things such as birds,
mammals, and crocodilian species
● They are often found near water and are
sometimes semi-aquatic, but can also be
found in trees.
● Wild individuals average 3.7 m (12.1 ft) long,
but have been known to reach 5.74 m (18.8
ft).
Where its from and now
● Burmese Pythons are native to Southeast Asia
● However, they began to start popping up in Florida towards the
end of the 20th century
● They were originally imported to the US for pet trade
● Wild populations became established from animals that escaped
or released intentionally
● It is estimated that the population of the Burmese Pythons in
florida is growing rapidly.
The Problems
● The main issue that they are causing is that they are preying on
the native species
● Numbers of mammals across the board of have gone down
significantly over the last few years
● Some of these species are endangered
● They are also competing against indigenous species
● Burmese Pythons and other invasive species are known to cause
the US over $100 billion alone
What is being done?
● Due to their habitat, it is tough to detect the pythons
● However, human and dog search committees have taken place to
locate the pythons
● Once located, traps are used to capture the animals
● However, it is hard to trap them due to the large area that they
habitat
● Methods of Biocontrol and bounty hunters have been popular
methods suggested as well
Extras
● There is a low risk of a human attack by a Burmese python.
Documented human attacks by pythons in the United States
involve the owners captive snakes and their owner or immediate
family
● A female Burmese python may lay 50-100 eggs and will wrap its
body around the clutch to keep it warm and to defend the eggs
against predators
● You can get paid to hunt these predators
