Essay #2 Prompt
Consider this hypothetical scenario:
Two days ago, the US decided to intervene in the Wakandan civil war by bombing the military
troops of King N’Jadaka. President Trump justified this bombing in the following speech to the
American people:
For generations, the United States of America has played a unique role as an advocate for
human freedom. Mindful of the risks and costs of military action, we are naturally
reluctant to use force to solve the world’s many challenges. But when our values are at
stake, we have a responsibility to act.
Having tried to end the violence without using force, the international community offered
N’Jadaka a final chance to stop his campaign of killing or face the consequences.
N’Jadaka declared he would show “no mercy” to his own people. We knew that if we
waited one more day, Birnin Zana could suffer a massacre that would have reverberated
across the region and stained the conscience of the world.
In this essay, you will answer the following questions:
1. How would realists, liberals, and anti-imperialists view President Trump’s claim that the
US has historically promoted freedom around the world?
2. How would realists, liberals, and anti-imperialists view President Trump’s decision to use
military force in Wakanda officially based on humanitarian reasons (that is, according to
Trump, to stop an impending massacre of Wakandan civilians)?
3. Which perspective do you support the most? Why do you support it?
Be sure to cover following class material in your answers:
• Explain the relevant assumptions of realism, liberalism, and anti-imperialism. Be sure to
apply the information to the prompt at all times; do not just explain the perspectives on
their own.
• Provide at least one historical example from each of the main time periods discussed:
Founding-pre-WWII; WWII and immediate aftermath; Early Cold War (1950s-1960s);
Late Cold War (1970s-1980s); post-Cold War Era (1990s-current).
• Note: You do not need to discuss every time period for each perspective, but all identified
time periods must be used somewhere in the paper.

Any material drawn from assigned readings must be cited within the text of your paper,
and you should include a works cited page at the end. The works cited page (along with
header information) will not count towards the word count.
You do not need to cite the specific lecture for class material.
If you want to use a direct quote (from someone that is not me) from a lecture slide, you
can simply cite the week/section of the lecture, for example (Week 7-Part 1).
You must use Chicago in-text citation style. Please refer to the handout on how to format
in-text citations and the provided works cited page.
Your essay should incorporate information from the lectures AND multiple assigned
readings. You do not need to do any outside research.
Rough Draft Guidelines
• The rough draft should be at least 3 pages and no more than 3.5 pages of text. The draft
must be at least 3 pages in length to receive full credit.
• Your grade will be based on overall effort. However, you must be attempting to answer
the prompt. You will not get credit for papers that are completely off topic, that do not
use material from this course, or that are simply summarizing events with no attempt to
answer the prompt.
• You should include a works cited page (which does not count toward the page limit).
There will be a 5-point deduction for not following the proper citation guidelines.
• Your essay should incorporate information from the lectures AND multiple assigned
readings. You should not do any outside research
Essay Tips
• You should have one topic per paragraph. For this essay, that means each paragraph
should address one perspective and one question (freedom OR Wakanda).
• Be sure to include topic sentences and concluding sentences for every paragraph, which
should relate back to your thesis statement.
o Topic sentences should identify the perspective you are describing, which
question you are addressing, the position the perspective is taking, and why.
o Example: Realists would/would not believe that the US has historically promoted
freedom because…
• The historical examples are evidence for your arguments, not the point of the essay.
o For example, if liberals support/don’t support US military intervention, which
historical event would they point to as evidence for their position? What does
their reaction to this event show you about how they would react to the bombing
of Wakanda?
o Be sure to always relate the historical events back to the main argument of the
paragraph.
• As with the first essay, it’s better to have fewer events that are discussed in more depth.
o Each paragraph should have no more than two historical events.
o Be sure to give context to events: When did it happen? Who was involved? What
happened? Why?
