Abstract
In the recent past, the effects of climate change have necessitated people to adopt new
sources of energy so as to avoid damaging the environment and the lives of the people in general.
One of the renewable energy sources which have been advocated and greatly emphasized is solar
energy. Solar energy makes use of solar panels which are installed in such a manner that they are
able to harness solar energy.
In this respect the major objective of this problem statement is cost analysis of modern residential
solar installations. In order to ensure that the installation of solar panels is economically viable it is
significant to consider some crucial aspects such as the cost of buying the modern solar panels, the
cost of installing these panels and all the accessories that will be involved, the cost of electricity
that will be produced and the lifespan of the entire project.

This project timeline isn’t perfectly accurate to the completion of each phase. Some of these

Catalog Description: (1-4-3); I, II. The student will solve a problem using the scientific method
of inquiry in conjunction with faculty members from his/her major area of study. The problem
should include the statement of the problem, background of the problem, parameters of the
problem, methods and procedures for problem solution.
Prerequisites: Senior standing and completion of 18 hours in option.
Class Time: 2:00PM to 4:30PM on Fridays in LC 315
The online section is for Technology Management students only.

Course Purpose: The purpose of the course is to determine the ability of the student to develop
and solve an appropriate technical problem, write a project report, and orally present the final
report. The course will enhance students’ abilities to communicate effectively in a formal
setting, to research and present information efficiently, and to think at the higher levels
required of engineering technology professionals.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) for General Education:
Student Learning Outcome 1a: Listen and speak effectively in small group, public, and
intercultural contexts.
All students in ETM 499C are required to make a final public presentation of their project to
their classmates and to the ETM faculty and Advisory Board as a body. Furthermore, students
are called upon earlier in the semester-long course to make brief reports to the class and to the
ETM faculty and Advisory Board on their initial proposal and on their progress in achieving
project goals at the midterm.
Student Learning Outcome 1c: Write effectively for a variety of target audiences using the
conventions of standard English. Students’ writing in ETM 499C is edited and graded by the
instructor and faculty mentor(s), both in the initial proposal phase of the senior project, and
throughout the semester. Furthermore, the “ETM 499C Rubric for Reports”, uses several
measures to assess student writing, including grammatical correctness and clarity.
Student Learning Outcomes 2e: Apply knowledge and skills to new settings and complex
problems (SLO-2e).
Each ETM 499C student will choose, in consultation with his or her faculty mentor and the
course instructor, a project topic which is designed to demonstrate the student’s acquired
knowledge and skills in Engineering Technology and in their specific option area. This topic
must not have been addressed before by the student in any previous class, and must not have
been addressed by previous students either. The student must present a problem statement
detailing the need for the project, a solution approach which makes explicit the steps which
the student will undertake to solve the problem, followed by a report which will demonstrate
the student’s overall solution to the problem. Furthermore, the standard for grading the
proposal and the report addresses the student’s grasp of the topic, and his or her success in
solving the problem posed by the project. Finally, the student, besides writing a report, will also
make a presentation to their classmates and to the ETM faculty and Advisory Board of their
findings and conclusions. The assessment of this SLO is indicated both in the “Rubric for
Presentations”, and in the “ETM 499C Rubric for Reports revised 3-2011.” Both of these
documents are available on the Blackboard site for the course. The Problem Statement and
Solution Approach documents address SLO-2e specifically by incorporating requirements for
(1) Task Analysis, (2) Workflow Planning, (3) Demonstration of Fulfillment of Task and Project
Objectives, and (4) Conclusions to be drawn from project.

Problem Statement
The Problem Statement must be typed, 1.5-2 line spacing, one-inch margins, contain the
‘Problem Statement’ title, project title, and student name centered at the top of the page.
The Problem Statement must not exceed one (1) page, front only and must contain the
following elements:
• purpose or intent of project;
• clear and thorough, yet concise description of problem;
• need for solution of problem; and,
• basic solution approach including a list of five to eight (5 – 8) major steps to be
accomplished with a brief description (1-2 sentences for each step).
Technical analysis potential within each of the five to eight major project steps must be
evident and clear. Additionally, the associated ETM department option area and estimated
time in weeks must be identified for each major project step.

papers (No book, Web page, Wikipedia, etc.) must be cited in the report to highlighted to
importance of the subject. The references must be cited in APA format.

Solution Approach
The Solution Approach must be typed, 1.5-2 line spacing, 1-inch margins, contain the
‘Solution Approach’ title, project title, and student name centered at the top of the page.
Based on the overview and major project steps described in the Problem Statement, the
Solution Approach must contain a detailed explanation of steps or tasks to be performed to
solve the problem. The major project steps must contain technical analysis elements from
at least two (2) ETM option areas (computer design, construction, electronics,
manufacturing, materials science, quality improvement, robotics/automation,
telecommunications, or technical management). For each major project step (5 – 8), the
explanation must contain measurable and objective statements that are sufficiently detailed
to clearly identify the work to be done. Use bold headings to identify each project step
separately and at the end of each description, include the following information:
• Applicable ETM course-related technical area (these include, but not limited to,
Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Construction Methods, Digital Electronics,
Engineering Design, Economic Analysis, Facilities Planning, Just-in-Time / Lean
Systems, Manufacturing Processes, Materials Science, Project Management,
Robotics and Automation, Quality Improvement, Structural Analysis, Surveying,
Wireless Communications, etc.); and,

Estimated time to perform the work in weeks.
At least three (3) references to relatively current technical sources must be cited in
the context of the Solution Approach. The references must support the methods of
analyses chosen for the project, not just cited for future reference. All references
must be cited within the project step or task descriptions in standard format for
technical papers (i.e., Smith, p. 127). Full citations (APA or MLA format) for each
reference must be provided in a list format at the end of the Solution Approach.
• A project timeline in horizontal bar chart format (MS Excel preferred) must be
developed to include the five to eight major project steps and their associated
scheduled time within the ten-week project time.
